Edward and Alphonse arrive in Xenotime to look for the philosopher's stone. After they save a young girl named Elisa trapped under a fallen mine cart, she brings them to the tavern out of gratitude. During the feast in their honor, the brothers hear that a philosopher's stone is near completion, researched by a man named Mugiar. It is soon realized that there are impostors they assuming Edward and Alphonse's names. When they sneak into Mugiar's mansion, they are fended off by the older impostor. Alphonse is unable to buy medicine for Elisa, since the townspeople believe that he is one of the impostors, but the younger impostor later appears and buy him the medicine. The following night, while Edward and Alphonse enter the mansion a second time, the older impostor, recognized as Russell Tringham, attacks Edward using crimson water, however the younger impostor, recognized as Fletcher Tringham, saves him, revealing that this water has polluted the town with its toxicity.
